What is it about the Big Lebowski that has resonated with so many people?
This is one of those movies that will never get old. It’s one of the movies you take with you to a deserted island.
The Coen brothers directed this movie about a lazy slacker, “The Dude” in Los Angeles County during the early 90’s, who mistakenly owes people money. Jeff Bridges plays The Dude and absolutely kills this role, as an avid bowler, former groupie for Metallica Speed of Sound tour, and fan of Credence Clearwater Revival. This complex, layered script delves into a mistaken identity case with a lot of ins, lot of outs, lot of what have you’s. Along the way the movie has numerous and memorable characters that add to the pure comedy of this flick.
This movie released in 1998, had no hype or big budget and it wasn’t a box office hit. Yet this movie has a cult following that is almost unheard of. A 10th anniversary DVD edition has been released with special features and scenes. This movie is a generational phenomenon. Somehow this movie has become a time capsule for anyone who grew up in the 1990’s. In 20 years people who look back at this movie as a snapshot for the Internet generation—college-age people during 1995 and 2005.
The Big Lebowski is so popular because it’s hysterical, weird, and people can relate to it. Everyone knows someone like The Dude, or like Walter. It represents a common theme involving nothing, life, drug culture, and the low-life characters you meet along your journey through life.
The love affair with the The Big Lebowski continues all year. Lebowskifest started a few years ago and has become hugely popular. This started in Louisville as a gathering for friends who loved the movie and has turned into an annual event.
See if Lebowskifest will be coming to a city near you.
Malibu from American Gladiators explains his passion for brew and women…fantastic. This is epic! This guy is probably chasing the dragon in an abandoned warehouse in Santa Monica. He also got turned down as an extra in the 1989 classic surf movie Point Break. Bummer dude!
Here’s a funny video from Conan O’Brien about olde tyme baseball. This is a tribute to the Late Show with Conan O’Brien. Conan will be taking over the Tonight Show’s time slot of 11:30. Let’s hope that Conan’s new show doesn’t suck like Jay Leno. Just keep up skits like this and bring back Triumph the Insult Comic dog.
